The Worst Writer: Everything But Writing
Welcome back dearest readers! Another week has come and gone and I’m here to tell you that I don’t think I have ever been more tired in my life. Like a pair of absolute psychopaths, my partner and I agreed to a weekend trip in Ontario to attend a wedding (you read that right, we traveled half way around the world for only the weekend!). And although it was a trip filled with friends, family, and love, I think it’s safe to say that my cup hath officially spillithed over. Not only was there very limited time for my writing, but when there was time, I was so mentally and physically exhausted all I could do was melt into the bed and play a video game that I have become dangerously addicted to. And yet here I am writing to you about it, so it can’t be that bad can it? WELL THINK AGAIN FOOL!
Return to the Motherland
For those of you not in the know, I was born and raised in Canada, and although Ontario is not the province I grew up in, I always find visits to Canada a much needed balm after my days of living in Europe. And wow, there truly isn’t a better time to visit Ontario than in the fall! For the past ten-ish years, I’ve mostly been visiting Ontario in the winter for Christmas, but damn, have you seen the foliage there in fall?! As we were taking the Uber from the airport all I could do was press my face against the window as the rainbow coloured forests passed us by. It really is one of a kind, and splashed against the clear blue sky it was the perfect reminder of all the magic hidden around us.
But oh how unaware I was of the gauntlet that lay ahead of me. You know that Lady Gaga quote where she says “Every night, no sleep, bus, club, another club, another club, plane, next place, no sleep” well that was actually a prophecy for my weekend. And before I get into it, I know that I’m #Blessed for all of these things, but my god, I should know by now that my social battery is some no-name brand piece of crap that’s well past it’s expiry date.

To summarize in brief: We departed our nine hour flight to take an hour cab ride home where we were immediately met with our family and followed that with a dinner out. Following a brief jet lagged sleep, we traveled back into town the next morning to check into the hotel only to leave immediately to make it to brunch with my friends. We then returned to the hotel and got ready so that we could be apart of the wedding photos and then stayed at said wedding until midnight. The next morning, after another fitful sleep, we attended another brunch, checked out of the hotel and returned back to Burlington where we had more family time followed by a dinner/hangout with some of my partners friends. THEN the next day we boarded the plane back to Copenhagen WHERE A MEDICAL EMERGENCY HAPPENED RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME. I’m not joking. The literal seat in front of me almost had someone die. Needless to say I did not get sleep on that plane ride.
So tell me, are you tired of reading all that? Because I was sure as hell tired of writing it, and imagine how I felt experiencing it! It was like I was a show pony being paraded around from one event to the other, trying to be my best self while slowly losing the will to live. Seriously by the end of it I didn't feel much like a show pony and instead felt more like one of those alopecia horses.

On the grand scale, the weekend felt like a lot, but when I look at all the individual moments I had, I can’t help but smile and be grateful. I mean, c’mon, I got to go to friggen Tim Hortons and get a boston cream donut and sip on an iced cap. Life truly is great!
Old Addictions Resurface
Wait wait wait, this blog is supposed to be about writing isn’t it? Well hold onto your alopecia horses damn it, I’m getting to it! In the midst of all this wedding weekend rush I had very little time to myself to do anything, and you best believe that when I did have that free time the last thing I wanted to do was sit in front of lap top and THINK. So what did I turn to? The sweet sweet siren call of the ridiculously addictive and time consuming video game called Fire Emblem.
You may or may not have heard of it, but they are notorious in the gaming community for how long they can be. There are four different storylines you can play that all come together in the end, but it takes about forty hours just to complete one of the four story lines. FORTY HOURS!! All together that’s over one hundred and sixty hours if you want to see everything the game has to offer, and that doesn’t even include the stuff that happens after you beat all four stories!
Something like this should scare people away, but I am unfortunately locked and loaded when it comes to it. When I’m playing I enter into a meditative state where time just slips away. Seriously, if I’m playing alone I have to set alarms just to remind myself that time is still moving around me and that I should feed myself.
Luckily my husband is just as addicted as I am, and the real saving grace is that after thirty minutes of me playing I’ll already find him breathing over my shoulder asking when it’s his turn to play.
Final Thoughts
Whoops! This wasn’t much of a writing blog post as much as it was a life update post. That’s probably because I didn’t write much this week, but every week can’t be a winner. Luckily for me the coming weeks have literally nothing on the horizon. I have no plans to leave the country, we don’t have guests coming over to stay with us for at least a month, and I can just focus on my writing at hand.
We’ll see what a little consistency does to my writing, but for now thanks as always for reading! I hope you have a fabulous week ahead filled with nothing but the healthiest addictions and reasonable quantities of socializing!
Ta-ta for now!
